Countdown to World Sight Day Begins

Countdown to World Sight Day begins

September 2012

Optometry Giving Sight is preparing for a record World Sight Day Challenge this October, with several hundred practices already signed up to help raise funds for sustainable eye care projects.

Practices are helping raise funds for programmes like the Mozambique Eyecare Project by donating £1 from every eye exam carried out during October, or joining their colleagues across the industry by making a personal or practice donation. Many practices are also involving their staff and patients by hosting a practice fundraising event and inviting patient donations throughout October.

It’s not too late for practices to register, and they will be sent a free practice kit that contains everything they need to promote their involvement to patients, including posters, balloons and a donation box.

The entire profession has already given a huge amount of support to the campaign, with the most heroic effort being displayed by a group of optometry students who are cycling over 800 miles from Plymouth to Glasgow to help raise funds. ‘Optoms Cycling for Sight’ is a student-organised sponsored cycle ride, with students Gemma Hill, Fares Hatoum and Maadhav Kothari cycling for 12 days across the UK via every mainland optometry department, and others joining in for individual legs of the journey. The students reach the finish point in Glasgow on Friday 7th September and so far, over £1,000 has been raised in sponsorship. Cycle organiser Gemma Hill comments:

“I have been humbled by the number of donations that came in before the cycle had even started, but I hope it will continue and that the event will raise an impressive figure for the charity and show the impact that optometry students are capable of achieving within their profession.”

There are 600 million people around the world who are blind or vision impaired simply due to uncorrected refractive error – that’s more than ten times the population of the UK. The World Sight Day Challenge is a chance for the UK optometry profession to unite and help the less fortunate to have access to the same services they provide to their patients every day.

Register for the World Sight Day Challenge or make your donation at, or by calling 020 7549 2080.
