I work within the Optical sector and for an Independent practice, we are looking to put the cost of a test to somewhere between £30-£35 (which would be the most expensive in the area) and whilst most members of the public don't fully understand the cost of performing an examination varies around the £70 mark I feel that a significant hike in examination fees will put people off coming. Whilst we provide an excellent test and want to differentiate ourselves from the mainstream Opticians I personally feel that we are going down a dangerous route with such high fees. The question is, if you didn't know anything about us and just saw us as another Optician, would you pay in excess of £30 for a test? Hi we have answered this question some time ago, so it gives you an idea about how common the problem is.
 
I guess from your comments that you are likely to be astigmatic but not of any great power. Hence in the past you have coped most of the time without wearing distance glasses. You coped because your brain knowing that a PC or TV is square adjusted the image over many years that it received (angled) to the square shape your brain then communicates to you. 
 
Now you have to wear them more often, I assume with a reading and close add for near to middle work.
 
When your brain receives a corrected (square) image for some time it will unfortunetly continue its adjusting role, but this time from straight to angled. Continued wear and perhaps using your distance correction full time for a week should train the brain to desist from its adjusting process.
 
A few caveats: Opticians can occassionaly get things wrong so ask them to check that the prescription glazed in the frame is correct and centred in front of your pupils. If you are trying varifocals for the first time do the same. If all is well with the lenses ask for a retest.
 
If this is proved correct consider a better varifocal (free form) which is almost free of any distortion at any angle.

Hi,

I've just got new glasses. until now I have not been a regular wearer, though I have had classes for distance vision for a number of years which I wear occasionally. My new glasses are for close work, reading and VDU use mainly. The problem is that square objects are very trapezoidal when wearing them. The edge of my computer screen looks like / \. This is not a minor distortion, it is quite pronounced. Definition is definitely improved, but I'm struggling with this shape distortion. Moving my head from side to side, which changes the axis, causes the trapezoid to distort, i.e. I can make it lean more to the left or the right. Is this normal?

I used this site to find a local Optician in Spalding in Lincolnshire, and I used Molsom Optometrists based in Spalding. They offer some state of the art equipment like the OCT 3D Retina Scan that another user mentions. They are by far the best Optician in Lincolnshire that I have come across yet.

Firsty congrats on your wedding. I dont have great news, for a number of reasons.
 
  • Your last contact lens prescription has a dated limit on its use because you must have a test within a given time, usually a year and if you are outside this limit you will not be able to buy a small box of dailies
  • If your prescription is within date then its simple just ask for the smallest box available (prob a month) either at your opticians or on line
  • Now for the packaging. The dates are their because the packaging over a period can effect the fluid in which the lenses are packed.  This in turn can degrade the sterility of the lenses inside.
  • You cant tell if this has happened so its going to be a risk
  • Getting a red eye infection on the day or during the honeymoon would be a real pain, and if you havent worn them for many months your eye might react badly to long wear use on what is going to be a long day and night!

Why not ask your practice manager if they could squeeze you in for a quick check up and enjoy the day, it will be worth it for such a memorable occasion

Hi
 
No one can tell whether your new Rx is corrrect without a full eye examination but it sounds a little odd that you could see one line better with the old prescription. I assume this was using both eyes as there is only a very small change in your left eye, I would suspect the difference to be more noticeable with the right eye.
 
It is not that uncommon for prescriptions to change and require less power.
 
The first remedy is always with the place you had the eye test, you have a right to ask for the original optician to see you.  If you cant bring yourself to trust them then the only remedy will be to try another professional practice and explain what has happened fully taking your new and old prescription and specs to them.  Unfortunetly this will involve a cost unless you are in a free sight test group.
 
Then if your lenses are wrong you can take the new prescription back to the original optician and ask them to change the lenses fro free.
 
If all else fails you could try contacting OCCS
