National Eye Health Week 2014

National Eye Health Week 2014 - 22nd-28th September 2014

A shameful statistic:

2 Million Suffer from sight loss

But where?

In the UK!!

We have been a nation of carers for many years, looking after the needs of Third World Countries, collecting for overseas charities in vision and dutifully saving our old specs for one charity or another so itís a bit of a shock to find out that so many people in this country have some form of sight loss.

One thankful statistic is that†53% of these can remedy the situation by going to get an eye check.† For some a change in glasses will bring their sight back to normal, others may need their cataracts sorting but for most the situation can be improved.

For the minority with difficult or complicated sight threatening diseases there is a lot of help and advice out there, from vision charities and support groups all helping those with low vision to live a better life and many new innovations in drugs and operations and even stem cell therapy which has the ability to improve the Nation's Vision.

Currently the UK has a blind spot to looking after itself.† So we implore you and family and friends to help us achieve a step forward in increasing the knowledge that eye care saves sight and can save lives.

National Eye Health Week

The week commencing September 22nd†sees the start of National Eye Health Week, when many eye care charities, health organisations and health professionals from across the UK are joining together to promote the importance of eye health and the need for regular sight tests for all. GPs have also been asked to make Eye Health their priority by the Royal College of GPs. Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians will be holding special events in the run up to the week and throughout the event.

Your public vision awareness site www.mylocaloptician.co.uk will be advising and reporting on the events, sharing the key news points with†NEHW team organisers and linking to them for event resource packs for those who can help.

You donít have to be involved in eye care to get involved, we welcome small groups of young and old to take part. Coffee mornings, school event days and day care home events will all help bring home to us all that we need to get our eyes checked.††

Vision really matters. Sight is the sense people fear losing the most, yet many of us donít know the best way to look after our eyes.

National Eye Health Week aims to change all that
